What is Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) and How Does It Work?

One of the main features that distinguishes IGRT from other treatment modalities is the use of imaging technology to help locate tumors and deliver targeted doses of radiation with greater accuracy and precision than previously available. Applying localized treatment to tumors makes it possible for the expert oncology radiologists at Bicher Oncology Center to administer higher doses over a shorter period of time while minimizing the exposure and potential damage of surrounding healthy tissue.

Bicher Oncology Center uses a linear accelerator equipped with imaging technology to develop a detailed map of sorts of the tumor’s size and location. This helps the medical team at Bicher to develop the path for the radiation beams during treatment. Defining the outlines and borders of cancerous tumors also help the technicians to avoid the surrounding healthy tissue as much as possible.

Image-Guided Radiation Therapy consists of the following components:

  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • Computed tomography (CT)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET)
